Steering wheel, Blinker switch

Post by 1surfer »

What is the best way to get he steering wheel off ? Do I need to use a puller.

I took the nut off and its not exactly sliding off.

Am I correct that the turn signal switch is under the steering wheel ?

I was told that my brake light problem may be related to my not so functional turn signal return switch ?

Yes on the puller and the location of the switch.

I got it all off.

The plastic blinker switch seems to be connected to the metal portion with a pop rivet.

There are about 6 wires coming out of the bottom that go down the steering column to several connectors under the dash.

There is no way to disconnect at the blinker switch.

Do I need to replace the entire unit with the pigtail and all ?

Any idea where I can get that part ? :banghead

You're lucky its not 69-71. There are bullet connectors on the column near the dash, unplug, then pull the wires out, with the switch. Kinda tricky to thread them back in when u get the replacement switch, but that's how its done. There may also be a metal cover, held on with 1 screw, that partially covers them. (no easy way to remove the wires from the switch)

I hope this thread is still alive. This is my first post and i am also replacing the turn signal cam in a 1968 D200. I've got the switch and casing out but the same problem as listed above the wires are wired directly into the switch and run through the column to under the dash. I've got a new switch coming today from NAPA. Will it have wires attached that i need to route? Or do I splice the old into the new switch? please advise, and thanks in advance.

I believe the one from Napa to be the wrong one. Although I may be wrong ....

The NAPA part was a "repair Kit" so it only contains the upper plastic portion with the stop clips. I think my switch is good so i have begun posting under "no brake lights" in the electrical help section.
