T.C.N. Number

Post by MadMC63 »

On a 1971 D100 DATA PLATE, what does the T.C.N. NO. stand for? The number in this box is F8178801.

I'd imagine "T Control Number", so whatever the "T" stand for...?

Of course, over in the ME on a US installation, TCN means "Third Country National"

It does mean that in the ME! I had thought of Technical Control Number or Truck Control Number, even Technician control Number but then there's the NO. at the end which I'm sure stands for number. It wouldn't make since to end with number number. :banghead

As per above, Tracking Control Number Number makes no sense.

Interesting! Given the time period, the fact that a specific dealer placed an order for the vehicle prior to production and, that it would be delivered by road transport could be a valid argument. The only problem I see with that is that a "Truck Consignment Note" is generally a paper, credit document that accompanies a shipment carried by the delivery driver. Wouldn't think that would be permanently stamped on the vehicle.

People say "VIN Number" and "PCV valve", so redundancy is there in many ways.

Ya, they "say" but "stamped" on the plate is way different!

I believe the answer has been found. :dance Viewing the "Dodge Truck Building Order" (Build Sheet) for a 1970 W200 there is a box located just below the serial number labeled "Truck Control Number". :study This box contains an eight digit number. This number represents who the truck was being built for (dealer) and how it would be delivered (by truck) upon completion. Also noted, at the end of the document was a line that read “End of TCN” which I believe represents that the TCN number was used as a work order number from beginning to end of the construction process. Possibly generated by the dealer themselves while placing the order in the first place. As unique as the serial number itself and specific to each individual truck build. Sequential production number, T Control Number, Tracking control number, Truck consignment note, redundancy. It would seem that we were all pretty darn close from the beginning. :Thumbsup
Special thanks to Bob for the build sheet.

The next order of business is to determine how to decode the T.C.N.NO. so that we can trace the dealer of origin.

I contacted Chrysler Historic about this and they don't have a definitive answer either. This is their response:

Hello John,

I apologize for the delay. We have been researching your request and asking former Dodge Truck retirees if they have any knowledge of this. Unfortunately, we have come up empty. Transportation Control Number came up, but we have nothing to prove this otherwise.

I am very sorry we could not assist you further. If you have any questions, please let me know.
