Steering column bearing?

Post by ledman70 »

Can anyone tell me if there is supposed to be a bearing in the bottom end of the steering column in my 70 D100 3-spd?
Mine just slops around, so I bought a used column, but it's just as sloppy as the one I have and has no bearing, either. What holds the shaft firmly in place at the bottom of the column? Anyone had a diagram? Thanks
Jeff

Bud Thorp [aka Powerwagon54] was looking into this
[plastic?] part. Perhaps he'll chime in on this thread.

There was no bushing or bearing at the base of the column from the factory. I am producing plastic bushings for the columns to solve this problem. Unfortunately I do not have a 3 speed column to measure for the bushing. If you are interested in giving me the dimensions I can make it.

I got this column from you this week Bud. I assumed they had something in there from the factory because mine was so sloppy. I guess I could have just used the column I had instead of buying another one, but hindsight is always 20/20, right? I guess I can take the column apart and fab something up myself, but I can get you a measurement next week. What kept them from being sloppy new? I put a new steering box on mine and it STILL wanders all over the road. Maybe it's the 3" lift I did on the front end for the gasser look? Hope not, it looks pretty cool up like that.

I'm not using the 3-spd column, I'm using the 4-spd column you just sent me. Do you have a bushing for that one Bud?

The steering box keeps it centered.
Is yours bolted to the box when it is sloppy?
I own 20 swepts, and not one is sloppy.
