Radiator, repair or replace?

Post by WD »

The over flow tube unsoldered itself. Or, if they weren't soldered in, worked itself loose. Top tank has a small pinhole crack in it. Filler neck looks a bit squished, very hard to fit an overflow tube.

Can't find a good used replacement locally. Is it worth taking mine to the shop, spending about $50-100, and getting it cleaned, fixed and tested? Or should I just bite the bullet and order a new unit? Prices new run from $230-500+ depending on tube count, fin count, copper/brass or aluminum construction.

Radiator is a heavy duty smallblock 69 type. Automatic trans, no A/C.
Thanks.

If I didn't build it, it ain't mine.

That was the very first thing I replaced on my 67. I just took measurements and went to the scrap yard and found a replacement. Only $25 bucks! It might not be Mopar but Ive never had a problem with overheating again.
Got mine from a 70's Ford, the tranny lines fit perfectly, although it took some persuading to get it in tight.

But, this is just a quick fix for now untill I start the full on resto  .

The straps for the rad were popped loose on one end, so I took it into have it repaired, and he told me it had a new core replaced at one time, however he did not know the age of the core, so, for $40 I had it repaired and cleaned. So for you, if you can't find a decent used one, then repair what you have. Just my :2cents

Do yourself a BIG favor, get your rad re-cored. Get
ahold of Butch Romig [aka "Rhad"]. He may even have
a good core to re-do for you. If your rad is a 2
core, you can probably add a row.... he did on mine
for my A318. Don't mess around with used crap....
you're merely inheriting someone elses sh*t. a good
re-core will run $225-$250.
