tranny fluid question
tranny fluid question
Hey guys, got a simple question for you that none of my local autoparts stores can aggree on.
I have 67' a 100 van 318 stock auto tran, one guy says to use red line Manual straight 40 gear oil and another says regular GTX automatic Mercon is the only fluid for dodge.
So ''type f'' is for ford ''dextron3'' is for GM right? so what does Dodge require ?
Hey thanks for any help you can give, i've searched high and low.

Re: tranny fluid question
Type F user here. That's what my trans builder said to use and the #2 choice of my converter manufacturer.

Re: tranny fluid question
I was told years ago that the high dollar "trick shift" fluid for 727's & GM Turbohydramatics is actually re-packaged type F.

Re: tranny fluid question
I would NOT use Dexron, Mercon, Type F, or any other fluid other than the manufacturer specified ATF+3 or ATF+4 (synthetic version). Both kinds specefically say "For Chrysler products".

Re: tranny fluid question
That's funny, 1979 DODGE truck owner's manual specifically says to use ONLY Dexron or DexronII in automatics.
I once had a 85 D300 crewcab with 727. It was a little low on fluid so I added some ATF-3 (all I had).....I got in the truck 3 days later to drive it, it would not move. Had to get 727 rebuit & a new convertor. I blame the ATF-3.
I stick with 4-speeds now!

Re: tranny fluid question
ahhhhhhh! I thought full synthetic is too ''thin'' for older vehicles?

Re: tranny fluid question
Dexron/Mercon, Type F, ATF+3/4 and most of the new Multi-Vehicle fluids are all acceptable
in a 727/904. Which is best is a matter is personal preference, as they each have slightly
different characteristics and can have slight differences in behavior.
F is a little thicker than Dex/Merc and will offer slightly firmer shifts, at the risk that the
thicker fluid could possibly not flow as well and have slightly less lubrication. With that
said, I know many guys, including myself, which have ran F for years and years without issue.
ATF 3/4 is a high friction fluid, which isn't necessary in an older transmission, it will not hurt
anything, other than your wallet, since it costs about twice as much. Main issue with the
synthetic aspect is it can leak easier.
In general I have ran Dex/Merc in all my old Mopars for the last 20 yrs with no issues.
As mentioned, Chrysler has speced Dex/Merc several times over the years as the proper
fluid for 904/727s.
Straight weight motor oils, should NEVER be used in a Mopar auto transmission.

Re: tranny fluid question
I used Type ATF once when Dextron II was discontinued. In less than 20 miles the transmission temperature went over 230 and the truck it’s self started over heating. I took it home, flushed it out with fresh Type F and never had a problem again. 60,000 miles later, and one additional fluid and filter change, it’ll still chirp into second and works great.
Re: tranny fluid question
I've only used Mercon/Dexron in my factory stock '67 383/727/4.10AS CamperSpecial. 312,000 miles later it's still solid and barks the tires each upshift. John, Tyler, TX
