Rusty box

Post by Davie »

So I am restoring my '66 and had what I thought a PERFECT bed. Not hardly a ding in the entire box (except the tailgate) or a speck of rust. Then I removed the tool/utility box that was bolted to the front of the bed and there it was...RUST where the vertical front panel jouns the bed most the way across and in about 3". The vertical panel is no problem to cut out and butt weld in a new panel, but what do I do for the floor??

how rusty is it, holes, big pits, ect....?
A lot of work to just replace one part of the center
of the bed with a cut in, but could be done with a
parts truck......

I know that JCWhitney has repops of bed the center sections,
don't know if they are for are "our" trucks since I haven't needed one....

Those "universal" floor panels are for Chevy. Can be made to work. I wouldn't use JC Whitney stuff if they paid me to.

Just put in some new tin where needed and Linex the crap out of it. Spray the underside too.

I had a similar problem with the bed I used to make my Swept trailer. Just grind out the rusted area and use somthing like POR15 to inhibit advancement of the oxidation. Then I used a piece of 4"x2" base angle that can be had from any steel building supplier. Weld the base angle into the front of the bed. The 4" side should cover the 3" rusted out area. This leaves the gaps in the bottom of the bed to drain it. I also welded a piece of base angle to the front side of the bed to give it added strength.
