Transmission swap

Post by 2bluesweptlines »

I have a '64 D100 with an A745 three speed and a 225 slant six. I want to put a 4 speed into it. Is the NP435 the correct transmission to put in it? If so, will it bolt up to my existing bellhousing? Will I have to change driveshafts?

Is your emergency brake on the transmission tailshaft?

For that year, the common 4spd was the NP420. It has
synchro between 3rd & 4th only. If possible, see if you
can find an NP435 [coarse spline input shaft]. I can't
confirm it right now... but the drive shaft for the 4spd
might be longer. To be positive, I'd have to look it
up though. I'm not sure how common the NP435 with
the in line e-brake drum is.... :thinking If need be, I
can measure up an NP420 for you. :Thumbsup I'll
have to un-freeze my shop door... :banghead

John,
Thanks for the info. What is the difference in the NP 420 and NP 435 besides their dimensions? (are the ratios the same and is the NP 435 beefier, etc)
What years did they use the NP 420 and NP 435? If I know the years, maybe I can go to a pick n pull and find the correct year truck and one that has the e brake on the output trans shaft and get it.

I have an early '65 truck that came with the rear axle
e-brake so I'd assume '64 to be the last year[?] for
the e-brake drum on the tranny. Someone else may
know different. The NP420 and the comparable NP435
both had a 6:68 granny low gear. The NP420 was
every bit as rugged as the NP435 but was eventually
replaced by the NP435. The input shafts went to a
fine spline [23 spline] starting in '69 when Dodge
switched to the mechanical clutch. I believe that
the input shafts were shorter too [... If FRANK
sees this post.... he can confirm...]. You have
two ways to go here... look for the NP420 or NP435
with the E-brake drum set up OR.... find a later
8 3/4 axle and switch your e-brakes to the rear
drums. By doing this.... a coarse splined NP435
[or NP445?? :dance ] should be easier to locate.
Your drive shaft length may have to be changed
when going this route though... that's not a big
deal if you have a good drive line shop in town.

The NP435 would be my choice.... that way you
can down-shift into 2nd gear which is nice to
have if you do a good deal of driving in town.

I have the NP420 behind the /6 in the Town Wagon...That is one rugged transmission and is thought to be stronger than the 435 since it has cast iron where the 435 has aluminium. I went from the push button auto to the four speed and had to have a driveshaft fabbed, at $200 10 years ago. If you can double clutch, there is no need for a 2-3 synchro, though the straight cut gears can tend to be noisy, if you can hear them over the Cooper Discovery S/T heavy lugged tires in back.

Looking to move 1,000 miles down the road in a few months, going to tow the 68 swepty with 318/727 behind the town wagon with the /6 np420 using a tow bar. I would rather tow the lighter truck with the heavier truck. Plus the Town Wagon is already set up with a massive rear bumper and welded hitch.

I assume that I could not take the e brake set up off of my A 745 and put it on a NP435 without one?

Stephan,
As I do not own an NP435 that has an e-brake drum, I cannot answer that question. If
you need pics of my NP420 to compare to your A745, I could probably help out soon... as
we've just purchased a new camera.... we're not yet able to download photos though.....
It shouldn't be long from now [hopefully! :banghead :banghead ]

Ain't NOTHING wrong with ANY NPG435, no matter what case construction may be. NPG 445 is even better, IMHO.

Stephen,

you could also use a 435 out of a 68 or earlier D300 as a direct replacement,or one from a D400-600 and swap out the yoke and use the 1.38 ''center clutch disk. They all would have the e brake on the tranny.

So the 300 & up Sweptlines kept the e-brake drum on the tranny? That's good news for Stephan :Thumbsup
It opens up a lot more opportunities at a boneyard :clap

That is good news, exept for the severe lack of good (or even decent) boneyards with any Sweptlines in them (none the less just old Mopar stuff in general) in Texas. If anyone can recommend some good boneyards with Sweptline stuff from east Texas on over to say, mid-Arizona, I'd sure appreciate it. I think I'm heading over that way for my spring break and I might as well pick up a few parts along the way if I can.
