Hydraulic Steering Mods

Post by nfury8 »

Rather than Hijack Andy's thread, I have started a new one, in hopes of further discussing
the mods he did to his hydraulic assisted steering.

Here are a couple pics of my steering to compare to Andy's.
Keep in mind this was a D100 converted to 4 Wheel drive with 81 axles,
and it also picked up a 400/727 and married T-Case along the way.
All this was done 2 owners back, so I am still trying to figure out
which parts are where.

I notice that you have the tie rod under the arms and the ram on top.
What does the other end of the ram connect to? Mine connects to an ear
on the axle and then with U-bolts to the center of the tie rod. Note that
the white steering stabilizer is now gone, it was shot. The cylinder is just
behind it, all greasy and dirty. Also I notice you have the drag link on top
of the knuckle and a straight pitman arm.

I don't care if my parts are a mix and matched, I just want to know they
are doing the job right and aren't hindering me. My steering is very easy
and doesn't seem to bump much. But it does seem to wander a lot.
I took a bunch of it apart this summer and checked the ball joints,
tie rod ends, and drag link. They all seemed pretty solid. The steering
box could be a problem. I haven't done anything with it yet. It is also
entirely possible that there are some 2wd parts still in there, that shouldn't be.

I have 31" tires on the truck now, but want to go to 35" and make the truck
a modest off roader.

Thanks!

-Scott

Hey Scott , Its greats seeing other ideas . I put the ram on top of tie rod mainly to protect it when wheeling . I welded a bracket to axle by pumpkin off a ford axle tube , it was forged and was free . And the other end is stacked with a grade 9 bolt because that is the strong point . The knuckle was drilled straight through and a chromoly bung welded in for strength . On the drag link I wanted it adjustable in length and on heims so I could replace easily if needed . I started with same steering arm you have but had bad bump steer , so I kept trying different angles and ended up with stock W style short arm and a little angle down on drag link eureka !! .No bump steer , so sweet .Sorry my pics arent very good .( camera phone ) .

Nothing wrong with your pictures, they get the point across just fine!

So have you eliminated the ball style tie rod ends all together?
Is is just a heim on each end? Is there just one bolt running through
it all and a cone spacer between the knuckle and tie rod?

Sorry, I am not very savvy on the various hard core trail modifications
that get done to trucks. I really like how your ram attaches at the knuckle
and then the axle. I don't see any signs of mine slipping, but it sure seems
like it could be trouble waiting to happen.

Yes one bolt through both w/ missalign spacers so it can move around a little . The tie rods are heims and a solid 1.25 bar stock drilled . Someone recommended hollow tubing and it would be stronger , they are right but I had this stock already .If you make a drag link ,and tie rods like this I can give you length . 35 inch tires are no problem on mine . I have read you can drill out valve on pump for more preasure , maybe but I dont like the chance of blowing hoses off or ram leaks . It has a good feel w/o .

I am really liking that setup! Looks like I might have a new spring project!

YuriOrlav, to my knowledge, the valve is not available new. However, I have
heard quite a few reference to it being like one used on early Mustangs, and
the often referred to Forklifts.
