Sloppy steering
Playing around with the 69 today and noticed how much slop there is in the steering; a lot!
Had my son turn the wheel back and forth until the wheels turned while I was underneath and it looks like all of the play is in the gearbox, not the steering linkage. We will probably replace the tie rod ends anyway this winter, but how do you go about tightening up the slop in a gearbox? Does it have adjustments, or does it need a rebuild or replacement to get it tight?

Re: Sloppy steering
Does have an adjustment screw on the engine side of the box. Have to loosen the lock nut and then use a screwdriver. Been told when making the adjustment the wheels need to be off the ground. Also been told you can adjust the box too much which is bad because you can't "take out" adjustment. So, just small adjustments to start and then test the steering.
Box is probably worn out and the adjustment won't accomplish anything but what the hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Re: Sloppy steering
To do this adjustment correctly you must remove the idler arm from the steering gear. Jim

Re: Sloppy steering
If you can't get the slop out by adjusting it I have a rebuilt manual box with about 1500 miles on it for sale. Replaced it with a power steering kit from CPP. If you have the $$ for the power kit that's the way to go. My is working great.
as I say "everthing could be anything but nothin is always somethin"

Re: Sloppy steering
I guessed that there was stuff like that out there but I just didn't know where to look. Thank you very much this will be a big help. I just picked up a 67 d100 in pretty good shape. needs mostly cosmetics more so interior then exterior. But a few mods to make it a little more user-friendly would be nice. Again thank you

Or just send it to bud thorpe and have him rebuild it. He did mine in my crewcab and that made a huge difference..
