I figure what good is it having it if you don't drive it. I'm up to 15.87 MPG on the last tank on my conversion. Taking a mostly highway road trip in October and we'll see what the highway average is...

I have a total of 5 pickups, 3 of which are capable of mid-20s mpg, so the Swepty is a toy. Mostly a farm toy. Even my flathead 6 powered 49 1/2 ton will get better fuel economy than my small block D100, and that is with a 4.78:1 rear end and 3spd stick.
The 413/727 powered motorhome gets 12-14.
Had the same issues with Fords, big blocks got better fuel economy than small blocks.

I know this isnt the best way to start off my welcome here,"BUT", if you are looking for mileage and want to drive your swepty everyday, look into the gm 6.2 diesel. VERY cheap buy in,all mechanical injection(early models). This is what they were designed for in MPG. It's a light duty diesel and cannot be compared to a Cummins or 6.9/7.3 IH IDI. I have a 1982 C***Y 1 ton 2wd 6.2/th400,14blt w/4.56's and get 18 on the fwy @55-60. I also have 285-75-16's. These can achieve low to mid 20's with the right set up.

Is that because the Cummins is infinitely better?manimal wrote:....It's a light duty diesel and cannot be compared to a Cummins ......
A number of us have a Cummins in our swepts and are very pleased. Mine gets 21 when Im hot rodding around town, mixed with 80-90 on the freeway. Towing at 60 I get 24!
But, welcome to the site. I suppose u have a swept?

Yes the Cummins is definitely a "better" diesel, but also MUCH more expensive. I only mentioned the 6.2 for MPG and initial buy in cost. I would love to have a cummins diesel, but the cost for me is out of the question right now.( I have a disabled 4yr old son and that takes ALOT of our 'extra' monies).....as for having a swepty,no....not yet. My friends and wife think they are uglier than a mud fence, but I really like the body lines. Besides, I have ALWAYS liked MOPAR. Other than having a few Dodge Darts,I have always had Ford and GM. So I am hoping to take the plunge into a swepty.

So, get a calendar and show your so-called "friends" how nice a swepty can look.
