separating spot welded panels

Post by flyngreenmole »

hey everybody
if this subject has already been covered i apologize. im going to be partially disassembling a sweptline bed and im wondering what the best way is to separate the spot welded panels? floor, fender wells and maybe the outside corners at the tail light. i feel like the answer is to drill out the spots but im reaching out for suggestions before i dive in! thanks for any input!

There are actually spot weld cutters that fit in a drill made for that job. One is a cutter similar to the way a hole saw works with a removable cutter and center pilot into an arbor typically made in China; the other is a single piece of cobalt steel made to sizes in USA. You can find either of them on Amazon or ebay. They are not expensive but I cannot attest to how well they work.

i went with the drill style as they are made here. i try real hard to keep my money in our country! the holesaw style probably work pretty good as they remind me of annular cutters. if the bits give me grief ill try the holesaws, thanks again for the suggestion

I had positive results with a Blair Spotweld Cutter on a fender. Think it was:

...but may have been:

I used a SLOW variable speed drill and old ATF since I had nothing better around.
This may help:

I have NOT tried this:

Video demo.

I had horrible experience with these:

... teeth broke off, never got a single hole cut, may well have been OPERATOR ERROR ...

Let us know how you make out. A truck box will give you lots of experience.
