I think you're right Chris. It seems there was likely no molding in late 65 and 66 due to the bed length/style change and the doors as you noted. So, wide molding probably started in 67.

There are no moldings on my late 65.
I thought it was just another option that wasn’t ordered on my truck.

Yes , it is the same size molding late '65-'68 , but the door section changed in '67 to accommodate the change in the outer door handle.
