69 swept line long box to short box conversion

Post by brikar »

Hi all,
This is my first post on the forum, I,ve been a member for a while now and I purchased a 69 D200 Adventurer about 2 years ago. I was looking for a short box for quite a few years but couldn't find one at a fair price here in Alberta Canada so I bought the 69 and figured I would take a shot at shorting the long box.i would post my progress pictures but every time I try it rejects them (says file to large). can someone give me some pointers on how to load them or is it possible I need to have authorization to post pictures?
Brian,

Ok
To start the truck from the cab forward is really good shape for western Canada but the box on the other hand isn't. When I got it the box had two fuel tanks it that were sandwiched between the wheel wells and the front of the box. Once I removed them there were years of dirt that was between them and the box. I found lots of rust of course along with the normal areas. On the out side of the box there were camper tie downs bolted to the side of the box and over the stress there where tears in the sheet metal that had been brazed closed.

Other than that the box is straight with the exception of wheel wells and tailgate which was basically folded in half. This is why I figured I would give it a try shortening it.

Here's a few picture of my tailgate build.

this is what I could salvage from my tailgate. the bottom you see is made out of a piece 1-1/4" electrical EMT conduit it's the same diameter as the original so worked out perfect.

as you can see from the pictures above the side inserts were in rough shape so I had to stitch together the bottom of my original and tops from another gate.

Very skilled, you are 15 minutes from me, we might have to get together and have a sweptline bs session. Now to take 14 inches out of the frame.

These are the main rear box supports that will be spot welded back into the rear pocket supports and inner stake pocket to make the assemble. They were made by a local metal fab shop and are a little thicker gauge but a perfect replication.

Whoever you have doing this bending for you is really good. Are you just taking them the peices and saying, "Make this, please"? I once had access to a Pexto shear and brake. Fun stuff.

But if you are going to repair the pocket, it looks like just less work to make the whole thing considering the time to weld and grind. Why make only one end of it?

all the bending I do myself other than the last picture of the main supports. I have a cheap little 18" bender that I,ve been using that has worked up until now and some auto body dollies and hammers. some of the Pieces I could probable get made but most of the pieces so far have contours and radius bends that a shop wouldn't be able to do with a brake so with lots of determination and enginuity I,m getting it done, and of course My time is free and I have lots of it.

Bless you, a real American. Pretty much the same situation here, albeit in addition to the welder with a 1/2" plate table, I do have a lathe. For a break, I've been doing the old angle iron, vise, and hammers routine. Ya get there, but there's coffee involved. Sure was nice to have a shear and a brake though. It's good to have a shop.

Yep, you're a great North American. :Thumbsup It was pretty funny.

I spent several months in Canada at my last job installing machinery for a process I'd invented and developed. Really appreciated how clean public areas were. The factory had great people working hard to make things happen. Management and the Ontario Hydro bureaucracy not so much. What I really didn't appreciate was the border control cops at the airport wondering if they should prevent my entry because I might be taking somebody's job, when in fact what I'd done was making gobs of jobs for Canadians. I'd been told to lie to them, but I just wanted to see how all that worked. Took about a half hour to get through.
