Sorry for asking a probably basic question. but when it comes to paint I'm not to knowledgeable. What type of paint was used on our trucks from factory in 1971? Was it lacquer based or acrylic?

According to Allpar, in 1970 "A standard 7-step antirust treatment started with a cleaning dip, then two rinses, a phosphate dip, cold rinse, acid rinse (metal conditioner for paint adhesion), and primer dip. After that each car got two coats of epoxy primer, then two coats of acrylic enamel." I also found on another site that dark gray primer was used on all vehicles in 1970. I would assume this information would be the same for 1971. According to DuPont, use of acrylic enamel started in the early 1960s.

I've seen a layer of Red primer from factory too. Maybe the plant determined primer mixes. Agreed on the Acrylic.

Thanks guys so the factory paint would most likely be acrylic enamel from what you's say.

I know paint type is the primary concern here, but the primer may have been a number of different colors. http://sweptline.org/forums/viewtopic.p ... nt#p181007
