windshield

Post by Jim100 »

I know the front glass is available new but I am wondering if a nice wrecking yard one is worth a hundred bucks?
Thanks Jim

My cousin spotted it in I think Kalamazoo at a truck only place ? I'll ask him more details and I don't know if it is a traditional or pick and pull set up.

I wouldnt pay a hunskie for a used one - pits, wear, scratches, etc. New is under $200.
Maybe $50 max for used, and if they pulled it. They're a *#%^$ to get out w/o breaking and another *#%^$ to transport home w/o breaking. Been there, done that - some broke, some didn't.

You're right, a used 50+ year old one will have pits, wear, scratches, etc. and all that going for it. Not to mention some 'Fogging" around the edges.

When I removed my windshield out of my '68 and the one out of my 70 parts truck, and since the rubber is junk anyway; I just pulled out the locking strip, and then I used a razor knife (now known as a box cutter) and cut the rubber off that holds the glass. The windshield just pushed out easily. OK... now transporting it home, that is a whole 'nother ball game!

Ya, if the rubber is junk, cutting is easy to get out - unless its gobbered up with sealant.

You might want to see if Pilkington still makes them in the US.
