1968 D100 Dash Color and Paint Codes

Post by modifier »

Hi guys, I've been heavily into Dodges for a lot of years, almost exclusively Power Wagons, but I did have a 66 D100 727 Custom Cab V8 truck that I liked quite a bit that was stolen a few years ago and I have wanted a similar truck ever since. I haven't been able to find a good replacement with pull handles but I did just purchase a very clean 68 over the weekend. The only 68 I ever owned was a W300 parts truck, and I don't remember the interior and it was also stolen. I have asked 2 very knowledgeable people this question and have gotten 2 conflicting answers; one guy says all 68s have a blacked out dash and the other guy says he has seen them both ways, blacked out and body color. So what's the straight dope on the dash? Personally I prefer body color and would like to color match, but I also don't really want to do something that wasn't available from the factory.

Also is there a list somewhere of paint codes? This truck is a bright medium blue with a white top.

Thanks, Chris

68 was Black dash only to the best of my knowledge. I'm sure most here will agree.

BTW, I am painting my '67 dash turquoise to match the exterior ....don't like the black dash.

I have an untouched Canadian Dodge D300 painted body colour on the dash. Not so black at all. :thinking
My truck is younger than me.

I have a 68 D100 in very nice, original, unrestored condition. Its been a Calif truck from day one. The dash is painted satin black as others here have indicated. All other interior surfaces are painted in body color. Domestic sales literature photos for 68 show a satin black dash.

My '68 D-100 dash is also Satin Black from the factory. I wonder if the D-300 that dodgeboykim owns with the painted dash is because it is a 300 series? OR maybe because it is a Canadian truck? :thinking Just wondering....

So the general consensus is black, but there my be some alternative examples. Maybe there was an option to order a truck with body color dash? The dash pad didn't start until 68 right? I found 2 photos of what appear to be 68s and original with body color dashes. One photo is too big and I don't feel like going through the steps to down size it. In this photo it looks like a 68 to me. White dash panel, dash knobs moved to below dash, dash pad. Looks like a white glove box too. Is that stock? Yes I'm buying Patrick's lowered D100.

Here's the other one. I know some things are wrong on the truck, but the dash looks original to me.

While I have your attention, does anyone have a lower dash aluminum trip piece that will fit a 68 with the proper holes in it they could part with? Or a possible source for one? I have to pieces for the dash pod and would like to bring it together with the other piece.

I'd have to agree.... the BLUE one has already been "customized" with a tilt steering wheel column, and white glove box door along with the white instrument cluster..., AND with a two tone left side kick panel. Also, on the padded dash part, you can see some "RED" on the leg of the padded dash. Hmm...

The Black/Silver one is too "nice" looking to be original. Not a 68 steering wheel either. AND... I am not sure that I recognize the aluminum panel where the ignition switch is as a 1968 part.I won't swear to that, it's just that I don't recognize it from a '68. :thinking

Black dash, crash pad and push button door handles came in '67. I have seen a '67 with black dash and crash pad but had fridge handles. Must have used leftover cab and doors and updated dash 'cause that's what was there. :Thumbsup

Every original '68 I've ever seen has had a satin black dash and dash pad, regardless of seat color or exterior color. The 1968 trucks had the dash pad on the passenger side. The 1969 - 71 trucks have a completely different dash.

That lower dash trim piece is on manual transmission trucks only. The automatic shifter sits right where that piece goes, for '65 - '68 trucks.

Is it possible 'custom cabs' have painted dashes? My '67 custom cab was painted body colour and my '67 parts truck was black?

My 68 was a Custom cab and was more than 95% original with a Black dash.

67 dashes are painted body color then black over it. They have a blanked out ashtray under the pad.
68 dashes are black only. They are a 1 year only stamp. They are smooth under the pad.
I sold all of my sweptline trucks, except the invisible one. I just couldn't stand to see it go!
