The "best" location for a gas tank, in my opinion, would be
mid frame alongside the drive shaft. Others have done it.
The easiest way to address this issue is to install an original
gas tank behind the seat along with a new sending unit gasket
and filler neck tube. Trucks had tanks in this location for
two or three decades..... :2cents

Bronco or Blazer/Suburban tank mounted where the spare tire rode stock. Caged by the frame rails and 2 crossmembers. That way you can still safely run proper equal length true dual exhaust on your V8. Trucks running a /6 mount the tank per Hobcobble's instructions, Ranger-Dakota-S10 tanks work great. Replace in tank electric fuel pump with a chunk of hose.
If I didn't build it, it ain't mine.

Mustang tank also works as WD described, only its lower capacity and doesn't hang as low
