if it is as bad as it looks in the picture I would cut that section out and weld in a new piece of metal. once metal gets rusted and pitted that bad its hard to keep it from coming back. I use the sharp object test. use a nail or something pointed and if you can push it through the metal at all you need to cut that metal out. otherwise you will end up with small holes that you cant see in the metal and it will bleed through the paint after you paint it. I don't care what kind of body filler you use, all metal, tiger hair or what ever. if it is thin enough to poke a hole in and it is not cut out it will eventually come back. :2cents

The pic is misleading then. There is plenty of good metal. the area can absolutely stand up to sand blasting. *without any creating any holes and eating through that is.

I went around w/ this flathead screw driver what ever metal you see in pics, survived the screw driver. This the driver's side, passenger side is twice as good. Q is, is this a patching job or replacing? I'm thinkn I could cut out and replace with sheet metal.

I believe exline uses 18 where others have used 20. Not 100% on original but I want to say 18 or 19 from factory. I used 16 because it's what I had but it's a bear to work with sometimes.

I wish there was a way to bookmark this thread. I am going to be needing to order a few panels from the website. Great resource!
