Utiline Bed Interchange?

Post by ArmchairRacer »

So a currently have a '65 long bed and I'd like to switch to a utiline. I found a line on a utiline off a life style truck for cheap, and it looks about the same as a sweptline utiline bed, but I haven't compared side to side. Does anyone know if there are any difference between a sweptline utiline bed and a life style utiline bed? If so, what are they?

Do you have an early 65 or a late 65? The wheelbase is different and they use different beds. Longbed sweptline frames need modification to use a Utiline bed because the beds are different lengths. I think Lifestyle Utiline beds use different mounts than the earlier beds as well.

I'm not certain if mine is early or late, it's currently stored at my brother's house an hour away so I can't check very easily, what would the wheelbase be for early/late?

The early 65 trucks had 4 headlights and round taillights on a single walled bed. They had a 122 inch wheelbase on longbed trucks. The late 65 trucks had 2 headlights and oblong taillights on the double walled bed. They had a 128 inch wheelbase.

Alright, then mine is a late '65, I didn't realize that any '65s came with the dual headlight set up.

You should be able to use the bed off the Lifestyle era truck then, but it still probably won't be a direct bolt on. The early 61-65 Utiline long beds are hard to find.

You'll probably have to cut back the frame rails by ~ 5.25" :study

Alright, I'm sure I can modify mounts and cut the rails, if I can't handle I have a friend who runs a welding shop that'll help out for pizza and beer. I mostly wanted to make sure that it would look right.

The Utiline short bed is the same size from 1956 - 1985.

1948. I've measured against my built in 48 Pilot House and the newer beds drop on. A high side short bed is a high side short bed, the factory changed to the later fender for the 1953 or 54 model year and punched the fender holes differently. The 9 foot Uteline bed (one ton) goes back to 1939, with fender holes punched in different locations for different styles and wheelbases.
If I didn't build it, it ain't mine.
