New bed ideas wanted!

Post by Stevenow »

Ok, so the sides of the bed are in GREAT shape, the tailgate good, but the bottom of the bed is rotted out and needs a replacement. What are my options there? Go wood? Put a big piece of sheet metal? You can't just get the bottom, right? I don't really care about keeping it stock for now.

Check out JC Whitney for box floor steel. There are other sources which
I'm sure will be posted by fellow members. Also, Kenny Exline "might" have
something like this.... :idea :2cents

JC Whitney like John said is your best bet.

But if the rest of the truck is going to be shiny and nice, I'd go with hardwood boards and either polished stainless or painted stainless runners with polished carriage bolts.

Work truck? 3/4 or 7/8 inch ground contact plywood (usually special order, it is extremely toxic, wear gloves and a respirator while cutting/handling it unless you just want to get copper napthanate poisoning), you will need at least 2 sheets and a bunch of jig saw blades. You'll end up with a small center seam, fill that with something else, what you use depends on the size of the gap. Dodge wide/long are well in excess of 8 feet in floor length, and well over 5 feet wide wall to wall. At least the 65.5 to 71s. No idea on the 4 eyed trucks, never owned one, same for short wides of either era...

Any sheetmetal fab shop can make you one. I have no clue what that costs. Kenny had one when I looked a few months ago but it was local pickup only. He didn't have a way to ship a 4x8 sheet.

Never heard of Kenny before this post, THANKS!!!! I will be using him for a lot of stuff in the future. He does have the 8' bed for $450- a great deal, but I'm waaaayyyy too cheap.....I'll probably just do wood panels. Now just how to attach everything.......anyone ever do this?

Thanks!

You could also cut the floor out of a 93 and older Dodge and weld it in.

Just curious,

With the wood pannels, where do you get the metal strips that go between the wood planks? Has anyone done this on a pervious metal bed floor Sweptline?

Nice ideas, gents...and not too costly. I'd love to see what one looks like- anyone have pics of a wood bed install?
