Gas pedal replacement option

Post by 66patrick »

I parted out a '66 Sport Fury several years ago, and pulled the dressed-up pedal set, among many other bits. For whatever reason, I kept the pedals. As I was looking at the gas pedal on the '68 truck, I noticed the shape and mounting were very, very similar. I laid up the Fury pedal to the '68 pedal, and it looks like it will do on without a lot of drama! All I'll need to do is drill one hole for the floor bolt, as one will line up perfectly with an existing hole! I'll post a pic or two, so you can readily see what I'm looking at.

But, since there appears to be a very good option for those minus a pedal at all, maybe '65 and '66 C-bodies are no longer safe from us -- lol!

I have on both of my trucks (66W100 and 70D500) replaced the original mechanical linkage throttle with cable style from cars. Cant remember what years but both Chrysler Corp.
The 70 still uses the original pedal and the 66 has an integral style. On my 66 I did it about 30 years ago because I did not like the throttle feed back when off roading (surging).
The 70 was done to accommodate a later 400 BB conversion without a throttle governor. I just prefer the cable style over the linkage.

If you like your plans then do it. It is your truck after all and dressing them up just makes them that much nicer.

Sure that one will work. Just have to place holes and crawl under to attach nuts and tighten. :salut :salut

Will this work with the standard linkage or do I need to convert to cable?

there are still good used ones out there. Just seems like it would be easier to put the correct one in there than it is to always be adapting. I doubt you will ever see them reproduced. The mold alone is $20,000. And sweptline owners will not support the costs of a new pedal.

I have one from a 68 New Yorker that had a big block. I'm hoping it works with my 440 swap and it is fancy with the chrome trim. I just have to buy the little wheel on the back since I've lost it.

It's odd that the pedal for sale on eBay has so much parting line flash given I have never seen a pedal in a truck that looks that bad. I'm a Senior Tooling Engineer and work with compression and transfer molds, injection molds, die casting dies, stamping dies, etc. A pedal could be tooled for far less than $20k but the market still might not bear the investment. Its all about supply and demand.

I was given 3 different quotes on the pedal mold. 20k, 22k, and 27k. The pedal itself is 2 pieces of steel hinged at the bend and then overlaid with rubber. Each pedal produced was 168.00 if you made 100 at a time. Price went up with a smaller order. I agree it seems pretty steep on the pricing, but given 3 estimates it must be close. Can it be made for far less, I have no doubt. But then that is how they make their money.

This is an "over-molded" assembly. It's true that tooling and part quotes can be all-over the board depending on what was actually requested, the process type quoted, material type quoted, tooling design quoted and the supplier's location doing the actual quoting are all major factors. I don't doubt the figures you were provided.

I've been doing this for decades and part and tool estimating is part of my work. I'm positive I could get a tool pulled together in the $7k range. However, before any parts or tooling could be built, a known good pedal would need to be measured accurately and re-created in CAD. I use Solidworks and while this is not a complex design, it would still take a little time to do correctly. Unfortunately, I'm buried in work currently at a time when I should be retired.
