If you're not pick about a color, I use tractor/implement paint. It's cheap, tough and cheap.

Re: Looking for low cost paint
I used Omni base & Finish Pro Clear on my hood.
Cheap enough, haven't had any problems yet.

Hola All
And of course, do stop at your local NAPA
for a can of "Single Stage Paint. As per
other items they offer, it is not a "low
end product".

Re: Looking for low cost paint
Our "local" NAPA store stopped selling paint YEARS AGO! Something to do with NJ regulations probably... So, here in NJ I have to go to an automotive paint store.Rodger wrote:Hola All

NJ is kind of funny... we are right behind CA! In NJ, it is against the law to burn trash, yet right across the river in PA you are allowed to burn it... guess where the smoke goes? West to East...

Re: Looking for low cost paint
Several years ago, I restored a '52 International, and painted it with tractor paint. It was made by Iowa Paint and cost $18 a gallon!! Five years after the paint job, and the paint still shined beautifully! I'm planning on using something similar for my '69 D-100, but I'm sure the price has gone up some, but it'll still be reasonable, I'm sure!hampstead38 wrote:If you're not pick about a color, I use tractor/implement paint. Re: Looking for low cost paint
if you are looking for cheap and durable, google rapco parts, bowie texas. they have military colors, including blue, brown, black, olive drab etc. i paid $150 for 4 gallons of paint. gonna squirt the old W100 in mid 60's semi gloss olive drab, black interior and underbelly.

Re: Looking for low cost paint
Tractor paint is still reasonable. And so are industrial alkyd enamels. Both are nearly as good as Imron/Deltron/Delthane in the durability department and are nowhere near as toxic to work with. You can paint your truck for around $100.
Or you can do what the guys on the Pilot House site do, Rustoleum. I painted my 69's green parts with bomb cans, cost about $25 and held up nicely for 4 years or so.
My 49 Dodge truck had US Navy red lead hull primer brushed on over (yes, I said brushed) the factory paint, sanded smooth then sprayed with Cessna airplane paint in the late 50s or early 60s. Most of the Cessna paint is still intact. Faded, but intact.
My next paint job will probably be with marine enamels. Not as pricey as aircraft paint, holds up better than car paint. And you can still order it with lead in the primer. Just have to know what to ask for. Get it at a real boat supply.

Re: Looking for low cost paint
At $39/gal its cheep enough, but it has to have a hardener and possibly another additive of some sort that will up the price some. As someone else said earlier, Omni base and clear is affordable (PPG's lower line) or napa's lower line (I forget the name) and are both good systems. In my opinion base clear is the way to go with few exceptions. Its a lot more forgiving than single stage, especially with metallics. What it all boils down to is "what do you want it to look like"?

Re: Looking for low cost paint
Funny about the NJ laws on paint, you can still buy some paints (yes, gallons) off the shelf at my local Napa.
Base/clear may be easier to work with, but in my opinion it LOOKS completely wrong on an older vehicle. Old stuff is supposed to have color right on the surface. Base/clear jobs make old cars look like they're dipped in plastic. Just my opinion
To the OP, does Dodge have a Marlin Blue? My brother had a 66 Ford that was Marlin Blue, and it was a fairly light color compared to that ebay pic.

Yep, it looks similar to the Blue truck at the top of the page. 68 was the last year though so that 69 has been repainted.Fieldbeater wrote:To the OP, does Dodge have a Marlin Blue? My brother had a 66 Ford that was Marlin Blue, and it was a fairly light color compared to that ebay pic.

Re: Looking for low cost paint
Ebay pic looks a hair lighter than Marlin blue... I still wish I had gone Marlin blue when I repainted my crew cab! But the John Deere old construction yellow was on the shelf and at $70/gallon I grabbed it. The single stage enamel tractor paint is great to paint with- went through nearly 3 gallons on my truck and it has held up great with no oxidization whatsoever. All I had to buy was thinner- there was no hardener needed. One thing to keep in mind is that the paint is very hard- almost like an eggshell, so when bumps/dents occur the paint tends to crack and flake off...

Re: Looking for low cost paint
Try PilotHouse.com and use the search function. Ask for roller paint. You may have to join the forum to see the thumbnailed pics, but worth it. Marine enamels or Rustoleum applied with, yes, a house roller, and the finished job looks as good or better than modern catalyzed urethanes. At a fraction of the cost.
I kid thee not...
And you think Swepty fans are rabid enthusiasts, just hint about swapping parts and 10 people want your Pilot House (48-53) cast offs.
