clearence lights???good-bad???

Post by 1968dodgecrew »

I scored a nice set of "yankee" running or clearence lights. awesom chrome and gaskets. I need some opinions or pics about the lights. I'm alittle worried about drilling holes in the roof of the cab and if there will be any issues down the road. Opinions????????

I put a set of lights on my 69W200 five years ago. no leaks yet. just make sure the gaskets are in real good shape, or new. I also put a little silicone on the screws to keep them from leaking as well. make sure the gasket sits flat on your roof. are your lights the ones with the half cover with chrome body? that is the kind I got, really makes the truck stand out. If you are worried about drilling holes into the roof(I don't blame you!) spot weld a light bar type deal on top of your cab roof and install the lights on the light bar.Easier to work on on a work bench,When done, paint and install Won't ever have to worry about leaks ever :2cents

I have a set of old style clearance lights to go on the D300.
No hesitation drilling holes in the roof, quite easy to ensure no leaks with the various sealants available and a gasket under the light.
For me, the more lights, the better :dance

I asked my wife about clearance lights and she gave me the hairy eyeball. She likes an uncluttered look while I favor the "UFO landing" style. Here's my compromise... there's a DC jack on the outside of the cab of the camper special. I'm going to retrofit a weatherproof connector and use a magnetic flashing yellow light for towing and low visibility situations. Oh, and I'll just hide it from my wife.

I like the clearance lights on mine, but if you install them be sure to mount them far enough back that they don't shine down on the windshield. Mine has the lights from an old IHC and I had to put chrome tape on the bottom of the lens to keep the glare off the windshield.
