Door Stem Mirrors?

Post by CaptKyle »

OK, on my truck {70 D200} the drivers door has 3 nuts on the inside of the door for the stem type mirrors to screw into...But the the pass door does not or maybe I didn't see them? It looks like someone just mounted a stem type mirror on the side with a few sheet metal screws. Question is, from the factory did or was there 2 mirrors or just one? talking about stem type or was this a aftermarket or dealer thing?

The drivers side 3 hole mirror stem was some what standard on these trucks, but not always. I have a truck that has no signs of a 3 hole mirror ever being mounted.

The Passenger side 3 hole mirror stem was an option. I had one truck with a factory backing plate tack welded inside the passenger door. Two other trucks i've had had a rigged up backing plate for the screws to mount too. So some of these passenger mirrors were used on doors that were never stamped/made for the passenger mirror.

Those are my findings from tearing down these trucks.

My 70 crew had the big tripod mount mirrors, and used the 3 hole mount for the main base.
On the passenger side there were 3 holes in door skin and a stamped plate, with nuts welded
to it, that floated inside the door. The plate was more of a three facet design, than curved.
It was designed to make contact just where the bolts were.

To mount the mirrors you have to hold the plate up in place and get the bolts started. Much easier
said than done! I would not recommend mounting to just the sheet metal without some kind of support.

The passenger side door has an inner panel that you can see when you remove the door trim panel. The inner panel, or brace, has the three holes in it but the outer door skin doesn't. You can use the inner holes for a guide to drill the door if you are mounting a passenger side three-hole mirror. Washers and nuts on the inside would probably work fine if you don't have the triangular plate with the nuts attached.

my 64 came factory with the right hand stem mirror. it had holes with the odd looking backing plate with the nuts welded to it. the driver's door had the nuts welded to the inside of the skin.

The later catalogs list a single driver's side 3 hole mirror as standard. All other mirrors were optional. I'm not sure what year this started but I'll look at my catalogs and see if I can find out.

The passenger mirror can be mounted with the wing vent assembly in place.

However, the vent usually ends up blocking the mirror, so they really aren't as useful
as you might think. The tripod style mirrors are great, very usable. The telescoping
arms are also great for towing. But they stick out so far from the truck that they are
easily hit when walking around the truck. I broke 2 mirrors on mine before I took
them off. I also didn't like how they mounted to the door skin.

Boy, You guys are sharp, can spot a swepty for sale 1200 miles away, No not mine, looks like a nice truck, maybe if it was closer to Texas would make a bid on it. But am watching it to see how much it goes for. Thanks Guys for the info, I thought the vent and post would be in the way. Will most likley do away with it and fill the holes. Any other thought would be helpfull.

CaptKyle-On your pass door, was the mirror mounted wrong? Shouldn't the two holes be on top?Or did it have some other type of mirrors?

You know UFO I never realized that! It's wrong isn't it! It had sheet metal screws in the holes that was it ..and had the west coast mirrors on the doors, I'm glad you caught that for me, that would have sucked if I had painted it. and then went to put the stem type upside down .

Thanks
Kyle

That would suck to find out after it was painted.
Went out to look at mine.
The screws are there so I guess the tapping plate is in the door as mentioned.
Just wish the mirrors were still with the vehicle.

I went through my catalogs again and it appears all years from 61 and up had the single driver's side 3 hole mirror as standard equipment. If a door wasn't drilled for one that would be a mystery.
