Suicide doors?

Post by Rusty_Quarters »

Here are a few pics of the way I reused the original hinge pockets to make suicide doors on my truck...

That's looks like a job well done.I assume they will unlock with a solenoid.
Would look really weird if you put the door handle at the front.

Yeah, Summit and others sell power bear claw latches for street rods for around $125, then you can buy a controller with key fobs for another 100 or use a small button located somewhere on the exterior door skin, or under fenderwell, I will use key fob setup, as it is cleaner, also this allows me to get rid of the wing window, and use a one piece window for then entire door area, with a little massaging I think it will be cool, and as I said before since most of the original parts for my truck are junk, and getting good used stuff is expensive and difficult, might as well do something custom, and personallize it, I would not do this if I had all original equipment, and everything was in good shape, I have been searching for stock parts worth a damn for a while, and I frankly give up, just want to get it going, it is a father son project, and my son is getting to driving age soon.
Sometimes you have to make an executive decision, and just do it.

That's an ambitious project but it looks like you have it well under controll. Those doors look really nice. I didn't think that one piece windows on a Swept was do-able but now have changed my mind. You might have to make a filler for the lower front of the window area to space the window back a little, but most new cars do that and mount the mirror there. Look at a PT Cruiser mirror to see what I'm talking about.

Russ,
Actually, when you cut the door to get rid of the "hump" where the wing window used to sit, if you cut it right, you can reuse the inner and outer radius areas from the original "hump" area, and then you just have to fill in a small area with some flat sheet, and that area will work excellent for the mirror mounting, It has been really cold here (for Bakersfield the 40's is cold) so I haven't done much, but, I plan on taking some close up pics of this area, and I will try to get them posted in the next couple of days.
thanks
Kent

Looks good Russ! What I was gonna do to get rid of the hump is find a set of trashed doors, cut the top part off (where you rest your arm while driving) and splice it into my doors as far forward as possible, leave maybe an 1/8th inch of the hump left, just enough to tie it into the windshield line. I have another trick I am gonna do to my doors, but I won tell you guys yet.
