swapping from 6 ft sweptline to 6 ft utiline ?'s

Post by 63d100sixer »

I took of a 6ft regular bedside off of my 63, and i want to put on a 6ft utiline bed. There is one for sale local to me that i want to buy, but only if it were a direct bolt on. The plan is to drive my truck over there,(when i bring it up here to reno) put the bed on, wire the lights, and go.....then unbolt it, prep and paint it and the truck, and put it all together....

My question is, is it a direct bolt on, or do I have to mod anything? My truck is in riverside for the time being, so I can't measure or look at anything.

It would be easier if i had another truck that i could use, but I can only bring one truck up here and its going to be the 63 :banghead mainly because it has the /6 and gas is $2.55 a gallon.....Im gonna love it lol

any and all answers are appreciated

I live not too far away in the back of Lemmon valley and have both types of beds here. You can do some measuring and look things over to determine what you need to do. I think it's simply a matter of bolting it on. Send me a PM. Mike

Utiline trucks from the factory had around 3" cut off of the end of the frame while the sweptsides fit right on. We converted my truck from a Utiline to a Sweptside when my Dad and I restored it. There is a schematic in the '61 to '64 Dodge Power Wagon book we have that gave directions on how to make the extension or how much to cut off the frame. I don't have the book with me so I can't remember.

so, am I gonna have to cut my frame?

The only things I remember when I took off my bed was 6 bolt on points. 4 accessible from the top/bottom and 2 that i had to wriggle a wrench into to get at....how is the utiline tied down?

Ever think about driving up with your swepty bed, taking apart the ute bed on site and haul it home in the swept bed. Then you can worry about your mods when you get home.
Plus if you find the wood floor rotted when you get there it may not be safe to hual it home that way anyways. :2cents

because this wouldnt be safe to drive with either. I would rather replace wood then sheet metal. If I have to I will buy the bedside from scott and fix mine, because the rest of my bed is nice, but that is last resort...
