wiper linkage bushing replacement

Post by sweatybetty »

well, i finally got tired enough of the loose, clunky window wipers to fix the problem. im soory if this is a repeat post but here is how i did it using newer nylon bushings that will probably last longer than i do.
1st pic is of the newer chrysler wiper linkage bushings. $3.00 a pair at napa. make sure you buy the NYLON as there are plastic ones out there that will break when you try to install them

2nd the o.d. diameter of the bushing is i little bit bigger than the hole in the wiper arm, and needs to be opened up about .008. i used a cone bit in a die grinder, but that would work in a drill motor too.

3rd drill a 1/8" hole in the arm for the locator tab on the bushing. this keeps the bushing from spinning and premature wear.

4th after tapping the bushing in the arm, you should end up with something like this
Image

5th AFTER the bushing is in the arm, drill out the bushing with a 3/8" bit. this will fit snugly over the wiper pivots and the motor

heres the finished product

slop plenty of grease on the pivots, i used white lithium grease, and install the arms and the retainer clips.
wait for some rain and enjoy your tight, quiet wipers!

i also ended up drilling some holes in the pivots and screwing in some zerk fittings.

Well done.
I recently found out there is an adapter in the anco catalog to change the wiper arms from bolt on the snap on style.
