WHERE CAN I PUT SPEAKERS IN MY 68!?

Post by BigC91 »

I want to install an aftermarket radio but I do not know where to put speakers. I thought about putting 1 in each door but I don't know how I would hide the wires? I'm 17 years old so I don't know a lot about this stuff haha. This is my first project of what I hope to be many. My father is a big mopar guy and he really has no idea where to put speakers either!

So If anyone could give me some suggestions it would be much appreciated!

if you have taken the gas tank out from behind the seat then their is a hole on each sid that speakers set as if the factory designed it! if not then you can also put them under the dash facing down and the other set under the seat facing to the front and even put a set on each side of the cab, and you could also make a headliner to hold two speakers their, by the way :welcome

The seats also set high, there is room for a couple small boxes under there.
I pulled the 4x6 out of the dash, and modified the bracket to hold 2 3" speakers
side by side with a slight kick out towards the outside. Still working on mounting
the head unit and additional speakers. Mounting speakers in the door isn't my first
or even second choice. Getting the wires in isn't a problem. There are flexible
looms designed for just such stuff. But the doors are so large and don't have any
insulation. Vibrations can be a problem, and you will also need to make a vapor
barrier to keep them dry. I also don't like hacking on my doors. There have also
been some interesting mounts made to mount them in front of the kick panel.
Wan't there a member here making fiber glass ones???

If you don't want to cut any holes at all, look here at Custom Autosound. They have a dual-speaker that will fit in a Swepty with a slight modification, since this is a sligthly larger speaker that what is stock in the Dodge. Look at what they offer for a Chev/GMC application. The dual dash speaker comes in a few different sizes. I'm going to put one in my '68, if I end up hanging on to it.

This is my solution to the stereo issue in my 67 w-200
audio 001.jpg
with no place in the dash for a radio-
audio 006.jpg
I bought an el-cheapo speaker box at wally world-took the p.o.c.speakers out, pioneers in,cut a hole for the head unit, ran the wiring out the rear corner of the box, attached some L brackets for the front to hang on the existing lip
audio 003.jpg
(pulled out a little for clarity)
Some light angle stock for the rear-cut to fit inside the lip.
I've been off roading with this setup and it bounces some but hasn't fell yet.-sound good and doesn't block the rearview mirror-shown in the next post
