Moons?

Post by HellBelly »

I had a buddy of mine give me a set of 15 inch moon caps that look like these? There are holes around the outside lip. How do they bolt to the rim?

You have to drill holes in the rim and use screws to hold them on. Obviously the screws can't be too long.

After you drill the three holes, you need to cut threads for short bolts . Thread pitch is your choice.
Being careful it can be done with tire still on the rim :Thumbsup

If you want the look of moons but without drilling the holes there are wheel covers that sap on and look the same.

I had them on my VW Fastback in the 80's until they got stolen!

The price was right  The caps were set up for racing lake cars and of course had to stay put at speed, thus the bolt on.

If it were me, I'd go down to the local salvage yard and pick out a nice set of 15" steelies that will fit the truck, drill and tap the holes required and clean them up, paint them, put on a nice set of rubber... maybe wide whites... and use them for spares when you want a different look, or put them on and leave 'em. :2cents

i had those on my 64 shorty when i first got it. cuz they look cool and are fairly cheap. now ive got a set of retro red, mettalic powder coated, 15x8 baby moon wheels on it, with the chrome caps and trim rings. a bit more money but much cooler look. but the moon caps are a timeless look and very inexpensive. you just pop em on, over whats already there.

I also like the look of a painted stock wheel with trim rings and baby moons. What depth or width trim ring do you use on a stock wheel, also what size of baby moon?

My truck is blue with a white top and white trim, it has the original hupcaps on it, but I think it would be cool to change the look a bit, kinda swap caps once in a while. It has stock wheels that are white and I think the moons and rings would really look cool.

if i can con my brother into lettin me borrow his digicam i will post some pics of my truck. dont have pics of when i had the smootie caps on though, sorry. but the rims i have are 15x8 deep dish reverse, got em from a friend for free. they were rusty chrome ones that i had blasted and powder coated the retro red.got the caps and trim rings from schucks. 205/60s on front and 235/70s on back gives a roddy type rake to it . its primer grey with a black primer bumble bee stripe that says "rust bucket " in the middle, and it always gets a laugh from people that see it.
