What year is my truck???

Post by westexasiron »

Hey, folks!! Newbie here, with a few questions. A couple months ago, I bought what I was told was a 1970 D300 383/4sp flatbed with poles. I didn't get any paperwork with the truck, so up until now I haven't had any way to verify the year. Well, this is where the weirdness comes in. After researching in the VIN Information page, it seems I have an odd truck. The ID tag on the door is indeed of the '70-'71 style, and even has 70 stamped in the spot designated "model". Here's the problem, it only has a ten digit VSN stamped into it: 1381738042. which makes it a D-300, 8 Cyl, built in Warren MI, somewhere in the 1967 run!! I verified the stamped number on the frame, and everything matches. It even looks like a 1967, it just has that really weird ID tag... Any ideas here?? I took some pics of the tag, and the truck. Unfortunetly, my real camera is broke so I had to use my phone, sorry. I circled the spot on the tag where it says "70". Any help and or info on my truck would be appreciated!!

Darren

I won't be of any help on the identification part, but welcome to the forum. Where do you live in West Texas? I grew up in San Angelo and now go to school in Longview. Maybe we can meet up sometime

Stephan,

Thanks for the welcome! I live in Midland/Odessa area right now. The Texas country band I'm in plays out that way every once in a while, maybe I can take the '67, or whatever year it is, out there for a road trip one of these days!

Okay, here is my best guess. It's a 67 with a lost title and someone switched the tags. Darn few DMV folks would know the difference. I think I would just enjoy it. Good luck! Mike

What the Oldguy said.   I can't see the #'s on the tag but the later rigs did not use one of that style to my knowledge. The cab has the '68 and earlier wipers, '67 and earlier hood and a bug eye grille so it appears it may have been titled improperly or someone switched to an earlier cab or both. :salut

The "70" on the ID tag is the model of the rear axle.

That's what I thought at first too, but the frame VSN matches the tag. And after reading 69powerwagon's post, the "70" on the tag has nothing to do with the model year!! :banghead so, that pretty much clears everything up, I've got a '67 d-300. woohoo!! that sure would have been nice to know when I was ordering clutch parts, and nobody could find the right stuff!! ha ha. Thanks everybody for help. I'm glad to have found such a great resource for these swepties!! I'm sure I'll have more questions down the line!!

p.s. Here's a pic of it working this evening... not really doing anything other than seeing if the winch will lift the front end of my '53 Ford C600 Cabover. It does, but i think I might need some airbags!!

Thanks for all the welcomes guys!! I'm really excited to get this puppy on the road as my daily driver. This truck is my answer to high fuel prices... The $750.00 a month I was paying for my '06 mega cab 4x4 with a cummins can buy A LOT of fuel and parts for this truck truck that i OWN!! Plus, it's way cooler!
I have lots of future plans for the truck, including a cummins out of my wrecked '93, so i'll be frequenting this board with lots of questions. Thanks again guys!

What are yer plans for the cabover? Those ARE heavy. We tacoed the trailer ramps loading my F5 and had to unload it without ramps. No probem. lots of ground clearance...

By looking at photo of truck it's a late-late 66 early 67... January 67 started the new federal "padded dash" and I didn't see the "pad" in your photo... My truck is 67 D200 Custom Cab/Camper Special and was re-called shortly after Grand-dad took it home from the dealer, to add the dash pad... Also check the exterior door handles, 66 had a pull handle rather than the push-button, which started in 67. I think the number your circled was the rear axle Model #... Should be a Dana/Spicer 70... Judging from the grille, emblem placement, wipers, and door handles, I'd concur with the late '66 or a '67 truck assessment. Also, that style of data tag is for the same era of truck, too. Definitely NOT a '70.

Neat rig!

I'd love to have pics of the gin pole setup on the back. What are your plans for it?
