The photo was absolutely 100% real.
Oregon still has some of the old Ponderosa giants around.

If it is, it's really old. IIRC, the cracks on Ponderosa are usually wider but I did note the lack of big cones on the ground so you may be correct. The both share about the same range in Oregon.
