Over tightened steering box

Post by slick »

A few months ago I adjusted my steering box. It actually felt pretty good. I tightened up the big adjuster where the steering column comes in. This is basically a "what not to do post" because I obviously over tightened it. It starting catching when I would turn. Well here's why!

I had another box that I had rebuilt, but I sold it to Dean. Luckily he gave it back to me before we took our Thanksgiving trip. Now I just have to build him another one.

is it possible to pack the box with loose bearings rather than using the retainers ??

i know bearing retainers are used a lot in bicycle bearings to save time in a factory setting,
but in most places you can pack with loose balls and get more bearings in place to share the load,
and you eliminate the most likely point of failure

I would not recommend doing this.

Well after driving a few weeks with a rebuilt steering box I am super happy. Truck doesn't have the slop it use to.

The bearings will lock together like a clutch, probably when you really don't want this to happen :pale
