My '68 D100

Post by iniviate »

I bought a D100 last year and debated trying to get it running. The motor was locked up. I ended up coming across a buick roadmaster for cheap and decided on a frame swap to the truck.

I still need to do bumpers and wiring for the lights/blinkers/wipers, but it's coming along. I can drive it around the yard now anyway. I just ordered some drop spindles for the front, as it needs to come down.

anyway....

According to Wikipedia, the wheelbase of the Roadmaster is 115.9". Your truck appears to be a long bed with a 128" wheelbase. How did you make them fit together?

Roadmasters have been around since 1936. Maybe its of a different generation? :thinking

The wheels were my clue that it wasn't an old one.

i didn't take too many pics, but this is what i've got....

the roadmaster when i brought it home...

cab set on the roadmaster frame...

working on some rust repair...

i wanted to keep the sweptline gauges, but they were all wrong for the roadmaster drivetrain.... so, i cut down the roadmaster gauge cluster so it would fit in the sweptline dash.

before stretching the frame...

mounting the bed....

Looks good, what motor and transmission did the roadmaster have in it? Im guessing the 5.7 with a 700r4. Did you use the drive train from the ringmaster?

yea.... it's the LT1/4L60e with a 2.93 and limited slip rear end according to the internet.

with that rear gear, it should cruise on the highway pretty well.

Did you have to cut the bed floor to get it to sit on the new frame? It looks like you would have to unless there are really tall mounts that hold the bed just above the frame kick up. I think I see daylight in the shadows of the 1st picture though.

yes, i removed most the bed floor. my goal is to be pretty low.

i figured since i was going to make a new higher floor, there wasn't much of a reason to keep the old floor... and it was easier to make mounts with the floor out, instead of pulling the bed off again.

if it was about half an inch higher it would only need to be cut out for the frame at the wheel wells.

what do i do for blades? my arm ends are mangled and missing pieces, so i can't just do inserts.

no doubt. its very motivating to finish things once you can finally drive it.
