Finally working on the survivor

Post by olypopper »

Just picked up the 66 D200 from the glass shop after having a new windshield installed. Next is some 2nd Gen Dodge Ram brakes from the part store via a Scarebird bracket kit! The seat is at the upholstery shop.........crying shame that the seat is going to cost more than the windshield, brakes and bracket kit combined! I went with the same seat pattern that Behindthebadge used in his build from the factory Dodge "comfort package". I'll start another thread in the build section when time permits. Can't wait to drive this old turd!

I'll be taking more pics as it progresses. I'm not doing anything major until winter gets here......then the body work and re-paint starts. I've got a guy lined up to do the sheet metal/rust work and I'll be painting it, same color too. I did have my daughter take a lot of photos last winter for some before and after shots so I'll post up some of those also.

I got my seat fabric from SMS fabric in Oregon. Very nice ladies to work with and they know their stuff and keep good records of each customers purchases for future reference. I like that kind of service from everyone except the Govt!!!

As a survivor does it really need a full paint job? just curious of it's current condition. Looks nice!

"Buford", as it is known, is a reasonably photogenic truck. The rear cab corners, bed floor and a little bit of the lower door skins have some rust that will be taken care of this summer. A paint job this winter will follow. I'll be driving it around like it is once the brakes and seat are in.

Only took about 2 hours to pull the trans and engine. Much nicer working on this old stuff than the newer rigs. I'm a boat mechanic and since it's winter here I've got plenty of free time to use the shop for old Buford!

DTA headers it is.......didn't see much for options otherwise. Will probably go for the ceramic coated ones. Going to try a Camcraft camshaft too.

Anybody want to offer some advice on how to get the rocker assembly apart? I've asked a few old timers around here and none can seem to remember............ :thinking

There is a single dowel pin located on the second support of each head that you pull out. Then the shaft slides out.

Yep! Got it. One of the rocker arm shafts was mushroomed on both ends and I...........might have damaged it getting it apart! Good thing is I can still buy rocker arm shafts.

No such luck on a hone and re ring.....gonna have it bored, heads reworked and crank polished. Definitley going with the Camcraft camshaft too.

This Mopar paint is great stuff. It covers really nice and dries fast. Wasn't too expensive either. I think they hit me for 55.00 for six cans (case minimum)
