radio flyer go kart
well i just wanted to share one of my other projects that i have been working on. its a 10 h.p. radio flyer with a 4 speed semi automatic. this has been a fun project and has given me a chance to do a bunch of welding. i made the frame, (which was a fun lesson in keeping things "square" when you weld them). hopefully it will be fast!

Re: radio flyer go kart
You will sit at the back, and I am going to put the pedals outside of the wagon with pads to rest your feet. The engine is a lifan 125cc that is basically a knockoff of the old honda mini trail engines.
Re: radio flyer go kart
My buddy put one of those engines in a trail 70 he is restoring, I couldnt believe how cheap it was for the engine and tranny, his had a clutch lever tho. My 02 Honda xr70 has a three speed, and it doesnt have a clutch lever.

Re: radio flyer go kart
Yeah, I went without a manual clutch, one less thing to try and figure out how to fit on this thing. As far as speed goes, the faster the better! I have two different front sprockets on the was so I can play around with gearing, and if I don't think it's fast enough, I can always get their 140cc engine!

Re: radio flyer go kart
That is AWESOME! I wanna build one now. I just bought my first welder recently and I have been trying to teach myself to weld the best I can. What do you use to cut your metal? I am assuming a band saw? Also where would I go to buy metal at a decent price. I went and bought a piece of flat bar stock from Home Depot the other day and it was like 9 dollars I think for a 4 foot section and it's only 12 gauge and only 3/4" wide. Either way awesome cart. It seems like it would be a really good project for practicing welding on.

Re: radio flyer go kart
Hey Jeff, I use a chop saw and angle grinder with a cut off wheel for my cuts. There are better tools. But it's all I have now. As for buying your metal, I go to a local metal scraper. They sell old scrap for $1 a pound. And they also sell new metal. That's where I got all my square tubing. $30 bucks for 20 feet of 1x1x1/8 tubing. It's not too bad, but it does add up. I built a nice metal table with a 1/4 inch thick top. Ended up costing me about 350 dollars. Another thing I suggest. Is to take a class. I've been taking welding classes at the local college and you can weld all you want on there metal. I go after work from 4 to 7. Just makes for a long day. Good luck with the welding. It's fun!
