spark, then no spark, then spark.... '67 318

Post by verheys »

My truck came with electronic igniton, a fancy hot coil, etc. The charging system never worked, until my mechanic found and replaced a bunch of melted wires under the dash. I've also replaced the coil and the ignition box.

Now the charging system works, but the ignition system is iffy and spark comes and goes. Right now it's gone, but it can come and go in a single I'm-gonna-get-it-running-this-time session.

I blame the electronic ignition. Any suggestions before I replace the distributor to put it back to stock?[/i]

Well don't give up on the electronic, because points are the last thing you want. :2cents I would get a good diagram and test light and start from one end and go to the other. At least you've got your problem narrowed to one system. :Thumbsup Mine is a nightmare from hell.

Ground your EI box to the battery, bet is solves the
problem, just run a wire from a mount hole to the
neg side of the battery.
Other things to check, most coils will need a good ground too at the mounting point, as well as that all important engine to
battery ground........

points

Do like Jeffc said and check your grounds, for melted wires=bad ground. I would in no way go to points, that is a major downgrade :Thumbsup grounds you should have: 1, firewall to engine 2, engine to frame (front of engine to frame is the easiest) 3, Bed to frame

I agree with both in the above posts. Stay with the EI. I just switched out the points to EI and love it. I grounded both Voltage Regulator and ECU and it runs real smooth. Starts easier too.

Just my :2cents

Ditto..... switched my '61 D200 & '68 W200 to the
MoPar Performance EI set up. Ground both as per
above posts. EI is the way to go :Thumbsup
