I seem to have finnaly traced my charging system problem.
When I start my engine, the driving lights come on. The "battery" wire coming off of the alternator enters the fire wall at the same spot where the tail light wire leaves the fire wall to go to the rear of the truck. Once the "battery" wire is removed from that bulkhead connector, the lights opperate correctly, and do not come on upon engine start.
Does anyone know where else I can hook the "battery" wire from the alternator, so that my charging system will work?

There is a "good electrical mods" thread here (you can find it with a search) that details madelectrical's fix to many electrical woes by bypassing the amp guage and relocating the alt's batt wire to the batt post on the starter relay. Another option (since it seems that the trouble lies within the bulkhead connector), is to remove the offending wires from the connector, drill it out, and pass new wires through the hole.
The instrument lamps are held in plastic sockets that snap into holes on the rear of the panel. Best way to get to them is to remove the screws holding the instrument panel, pull the panel fwd (spedo cable will have to be unscrewed from the spedometer probably), pull out the sockets and change the lamps.

If you want your alt gauge to work right, drill
and pass new wire, just be sure to use the same
guage wire (10ga if I recall). I also recommed
soldering instead of just crip contectors on all
splices or ends.
