Gage reading question

Post by plymwdy »

My fuel, temp and gas gages started reading low, about half of what they used to read. I checked the ground wire on the back of the cluster and it was tight. Where is the other end of this ground? It disapears into the wire harness. The wiring diagrams don't help much. Would it be easier to run another ground wire? If it isn't a grounding problem, is there a voltage regulator somewhere on the cluster. I've read an article about an electronic regulator that can be made and used on the cars that have this problem. Is this a possible fix for my truck? 1971 LWB 318/727.
Thanks!

Have you grounded the ends (at the sender) of each
wire feeding signal to the gauges?
If you do that and the guages both peg its not
a cluster ground problem.
I would be looking the other ground wires
and be sure there in good shape frist...
battery to engine> engine to fire wall.....
If you do need to run a new ground for the cluster
just pick a spot on the fire wall and run it to there.

You may also wish to have your charge system checked..
if your amp/voltage is low it will cause the gauges
to read low.

Note:
power for the gauges (fuel/temp) comes from the
key switch (red wire from key). Check voltage
at that wire also.
