Brake light / turn indicator problem

Post by Disco »

I have been working on my electrical and got all the lights working except the rt brake light. The rt rear turn signal works just fine but not the brake light on that side. This has to be an bad contactor in the switch in the column right? I took it out last week the cams look fine but its a riveted assy with the contactors inside. I looked around for a replacement switch and what I found was way to pricey (like >$100). Is the junk yard my only shot for a reasonable replacement? What years would work in my 66 and did they use the same unit in anything else (dart maybe)? Has anyone tried drilling out the rivets cleaning the contactors and putting one of these back together with some bolts?

Make sure your taillight housing has a clean ground where it screws into the bed. I suggest a piece of fine grit sandpaper or emery cloth to clean the area around the screw holes on the bed. It is also advisable to run a ground strap between the bed and cab. If you can find an NOS or good used turn signal switch be prepared to fork out som $$$. Jim

sounds like a switch problem to me, since the signal works but the brake light does not (they both use the same wire from switch back to the light) and everything works fine on the left side. That is assuming that
you are getting a good brite light from them.
Otherwise what Jim said goes.....

I have never tried to rebuild one, might be worth a
try.

Thanks, I cleaned the housing and ran some grounds a few weeks back the light comes on bright as day with the indicator. Its got to be the switch. As I have one good brake light and I am in Alabama I may let it ride for a while before trying the rebuild...maybe I can find a used switch out of a Junker. I'm still looking for a parking break bar I'll just add a switch to the list.
