Two field alternator question

Post by POWWAG »

My 65 D100 was converted to a two field alternator before I owned it. The only wire hooked to anything was the black 10ga. My 77 factory book shows the 10ga. going to the ammeter with one field wire going to ignition (switched) positive and the other going to the voltage regulator. The second wire coming off the voltage regulator is going to ignition (switched) positive.

I got all of that, but does it matter which field wire goes to voltage regulator? The service manual doesn’t make any distinction.

Thanks in advance…..Don

Don, just nitpicking a little, it isn't a two field alt, the correct term for an alternator with two field connectors is "isolated field" alternator. There's just one field winding in it. As far as reversing the connections, I've never tried it but also think it would work.

if your going to the new reg, you got it right, and no, it doesnt matter which wire you choose. if you wanna stick with the stock reg for the 65, run one field as it should be to the reg, and ground the other one to the block. thats the way my 65 has been running for going on 2 years now. :Thumbsup
