Getting Closer to the Problem

Post by Sully »

Ok.you have all been through somnething like it...now, please, help me solve this riddle. (Thanks Jeff c...you da man!)

The left front turn signal..still...when I use the directional signal, the dash indicator works...along with the instrument cluster lights. They blink with it. When I turn on the head lights, the left turn signal stays on.

Ok..there it is. All grounds checked, cleaned, reattached. Yellow wires chased from here to paris...can't find a break or short.

Instrument lights go on with the left turn signal. Signal doesn't work when the head lights are on.

Thanks again

It almost sounds like it's backfeeding into that circuit somewhere. I assumeit's a constant on, not flashing, right? :thinking Have you looked at the switch in the culumn yet? I'm kinda stumped here too.

Something that I did once to help out my truck was to add some grounds and tie them together. I went from the opposite side of the engine that the battery grounded to. Ran one from the back of the head to the frame, one from the head to the fender, and then one between the fender and frame connections. Essentially a triangle. I added a ground from my ignition module to this ground set-up as well. All my lights were slightly brighter, and my module boxes lasted longer.

Hey, if it don't help it's not hard to remove at least!

Funny...my sons and the ex want that truck out of their back yard

I have more ground wires than I need...engine to block, cab to frame, second ground frome frame to cab.

I'm just wondering why the other lights don't react that way. Why only one?

Why do the instrument lights in the dash ligfht up when I turn on the left directional?

damn

Keep thinkin' lads!!

it has to be either in the plastic connectors at firewall or in the first 12" of wire coming out. OOOPS almost forgot is the parking light ground connected to the screw on the grill?????? This screw on the 70's is the second one from the hood latch and the wire is grounded between the grill and radiator core support.
if ya have that ground then it has to be in the fuse box or the wiring from the steering column

Robin and I are thinking on the same lines now.
Need to find out for sure if it is in front or
behind the fire wall.
Pull all the wires off the engine side of fire
wall (be sure to remember were they go).
If it still does it to lights in the dash the dash
it has to be under there some were.
I'm thinking that it has to be the fire wall plug
or something under the dash at this point.
Plug everything back in one set of plugs at a time
and test as you go.
Did you get that simple light tester I told you about??

Doesn't the instrument cluster lights ground through the mounting plate? I seem to recall the light sockets ground to that, then it grounds to the cab when you screw that into place. :thinking

Depends on year, some of the inst clusters will have
a ground wire (white wire) screwed to the back of the
cluster; you will find this on most 67 and later trucks,
but sometimes added to the early trucks also.
All the early one were just gounded to the dash by
the screws holding the cluster in place.
