Dual points/Single Points

Post by coffincustoms »

Hey guys, I have to admit I'm being lazy dont want to talk outside in the cold to look at my distributor. I am going to be buying a pertronix ignition kit foor my 69 318 and I saw something aboout dual points. I believe these were only in the big blocks but if Im wrong please correct me. Thanks!

if your gonna be buyin a new ignition, why not go ahead and convert to electronic ignition? i got a brand new mopar hi-performance electronic ignition conversion kit (ECU, distributor, wiring harness, etc) on e-bay for only $130. makes a big difference over points type ignition and takes all of a half an hour to install.

fish> that is what a pretronix unit is> EI

Some HP small blocks came with duel point dist, but there few and far between on the small blocks.
If you pop your cap it is a good bet it is a
single point dist.....

for just the pertronix HEI style trigger pick-up kit is around 80 bux. for just another 40 you can get the whole deal with a new distributor. on that old of a motor, it's prolly wore out anyways so it wouldn't hurt to change it out as well.

Can't disagree with that.
But $40 is $40.....
you can also pick up
a used EI dist at a yard and
check it before buying it,
get the wires and walk out
of the yard to the parts store
for a new box and be out
less than $30 to $40 total.....

All depends.
I have no problem with Pertronix, or any
other way of doing it.......

Electronic

Post by MountainMoparRobin »

I have a friend who doesn't post here but he changed his 70 LA318 to peotronix and he did it himself, he says the best thing he's done, starts fast all the time, no cutting out, I had electronic from 1990-2001 then changed to MSD, not because of any issue's just was told MSD was better, I have to say it comes with Customer support no matter how long you have it, and it makes testing very easy, you would not believe how much spark and how far it jumps, anyway you can't go wrong with electronic conversion :Thumbsup

Pertronics is a good unit, I have one on a '68 Caddie that's been in the family since it was a year old. The Mopar Performance set up is good but the distributor is curved way to fast for most of our trucks. Jeffs idea with the junkyard is a time honored one that I have used myself. The main thing is to get the ignition curve to match your motor, you might want to look at this website as I have bought 3 of these ignition systems with the curved distributor and it was worth every penny spent. http://www.4secondsflat.com
