Help - No Spark - BUBBA GRUMP IS ALIVE (sort of)

I have a basic circuit run. Start and run. Engine Turns over - no spark. I replaced the cap, rotor, condenser, points, coil and wires. Putting new plugs in tomorrow. Straight wire from battery positive to coil positive. No power to any other circuit as there are numerous wire issues there!

Engine cranks and coil gets hot but no spark!

What about the wire to the dist.? :thinking

Its there and hooked up. I have not tried to replace that yet.

If the coil is getting hot, then it's getting power....
but are sure you got the hot wire hooked to the right side of coil (+is hot, - is dist.)

were are you testing for spark?
coil wire or
plug wire?

are you sure that the dist is turning?
pull cap and make sure...

When your in there are the points closing?

are you sure that the rotor is in place?
guess you'll find out when you check to see
if the rotor is there....

May sound like a lot of simple stuff, but you
would be shocked at how many times this kind of
stuff can stump you.....

Rotor is turning.

Battery connected to Positive coil terminal.

I have bypassed the resistor for the time being. May wire one in today.

Have to replace plugs and set points gap

Checked for spark at both coil and plug wire

I'm lost.

Going to rcheck fireing order too.

if you found you have spark coming to the coil, but none coming out, then start their, also, I've made the mistake back in the day of setting the points on the flat instead of lobe :banghead

OK next step....
as per Robin, make sure you are getting signal
from dist to coil... points act as a gound when closed
and that causes the coil to fire.

I assume the coil is in its holder, coil case needs
to be gounded and the holder does this.

If the above checks, get anouther coil and put it in
if you got one around. You should be able to get a
new stock coil for under $20 if needed.

The simplest method of checking for fire that I’ve found is to use a test light. The kind that looks like a awl with one wire coming out of the end of a handle that lights up. Hook the wire to the neg. post of the battery (or any metal that’s grounded).

Touch the point of the tester to the positive post to make sure that you have ground. (It should light the tester).

Then, remove cap and rotor, touch pointer to the movable arm side of the points and push them open. When they are open it should light, when they close the light should go out.

If the tester lights up, then you have power to the points. If it does not go off when the points “closeâ€

Between chasing my little ones and trying to work on the truck I got it going today. Points hold down screw was slightly stripped. Enough so that when the engine turned it would move the points to keep them closed! Plug wires were also mixed up.

Now I have no fuel delivery.

Bad Pump ????
Clogged line ????

I'm going to try and blow out the lines with compressed air to dislodge any debris by the tank pickup first.

With a gravity feed to the carb It ran for about 10 minutes without a hickup!

He will come home sometime this week or next weekend!

You should be able to blow (wipe it off first) air freely/easily through the fuel filter.

Fuel filter blew alot of dust out when I took it off. Replacement only $1.99! Open line from fuel pum right now and with a gravity feed to the carb could not get any flow from the hose.

Next step is to blow out the line between the tank and pump to see if it is clogged at the pickup in the tank. Tank was empty and now has 5 gallons of gas in it.

I'm also going to pick up a small boat tank to use if I need it!

Truck has been sitting for 4 years.

Tank pickup could certainly be it. The sediments can pack into the bottom of the pickup tube and set like cement. Mine did that from sitting about the same amount of time. I had to pull the sender/pickup out of the tank and clean it out with a wire and penetrating oil.
