Alternator conversion from 3 wires to one wire

Post by mojojo »

Hello guys,

Long time since last question. Busy working on my 1966. Will post pictures in 3 weeks.

Meanwhile, looking at replacing the alternator and switch from three wires round back (external regulator of course) to one wire square back (round not avail with one wire I think).

The mean reason is look (chrome and less wiring without the regulator). My poly 318 will be electronic ignition. Nothing fancy, just MOPAR kit.

Is this a simple conversion? If anybody has the answer, can you be specific ie what wire will go where (if I remember well, one wire goes from the regulator to the distributor). Any change with this.

Also what is the difference between round and square back. Is it only the look or there is more to it?
Thanks.

the biggest difference in the one wire is the fact the regulator is built in and is self exciting. you will notice in most cases you have to get the rpm up a bit to get it to start charging. so dont be alarmed if at idle your gauge reads a drain. most of the one wires are a higher amperage also, so you might want to check and be sure your not about to throw some big amp alt on there and fry your harness. :Thumbsup

Let me see if your asking the right question......
One field wire (power to battery and one to reg= 2wires)
Two field wire ( " " " and two to reg= 3wires)

both of the above can come as 6 hole square back or the older closed back, though the 6 hole ones are most often the 2 field wire type (EI type reg).

True one wire 100amp+ (GM crap with build in reg)
to use this one you need to by pass your amp gauge
or you will cook the gauge and wire it if ever hits a high voltage draw. As long as you stay under a 70amp use/draw you will not fry things, but do you what to
take that chance?? all it take is one little grounding
of something that shouldn't and :banghead
