On my 71 D100 /6
My charging issues seem to keep coming back.
Last week while driving her home from work, I noticed the Temp gauge sitting all the way to the right, like it was majorly over heating (It wasn't) and the Fuel gauge almost on full when I knew it only had a quarter tank left. I pulled over and looked things over, noticed nothing out of the ordinary, so I pulled the positive off the battery and it instantly died. Ok no problem must be that darn alternator, I had a feeling it was messing up.
Finally got $44.00 today so I went and got one. Put it on and noting changed. Everything still the same as above.
Can you guys help me understand how this alternator is suppose to work.
Putting a volt meter on my battery, it reads 9.75 (Running or not)
I have two small wires "Orange" and "Green" which plug into the back of the alternator, both read 9.38
The larger wire which connects to the back of the alternator on the post that says "BAT" reads NOTING, 0, ZIPPO! (running or not). If I touch the wire to the body, noting happens. Isn't it suppose to have a charge or is just a return wire to the battery?
The "BAT POST" coming out of the alternator while running reads... NOTHING, 0, ZIPPO! Shouldn't that have like 11 or 12 volts coming out of it?
Do I have this all backwards? Did the idiots at O'Riley's sell me a bad alternator?
Charging Issue!

Took the new alternator back to the store this morning, they tested it and it was pumping out 12 Volts.....
So I took it back home and put it back on and started tracing wires, I get to the voltage regulator and unplugged it and plug it back in.. No change.. Well crap! Keep tracing... I pull the harness off the fire wall and right when I did that I could tell the alternator was charging again..(engine dropped idle a bit)
Ran around inside and sure enough it was charging. WTF!!
I go back out and start moving the wire again and it stops charging.. I pull the regulator plug out again an got a small screw driver and cleaned out the female connectors on the plug and plugged her back in.. BINGO!! that was it!!
All that headache over DIRT!! lol
Took the alternator back and got my money back! Got $10.00 extra because they couldn't find my core LOL. Always good to take junk alternators as cores! Got $10.00 for it WOOHOO
Dave i appreciate the help!
