neutral safety switch/ push button

Post by heviarti »

where does it live? in the shifter or at the tranny?

I seem to have an intermittent no start condition, I have a new starter relay, and the starter kicks when shorted at the unit.

NS switch is on the side of the trans near the
shifter cable port on the pushbutton trans.

Problems with starting can be related to not only the
relay, but grounding of the engine (thus the trans), wire to switch and the switch itself.

Test the switch, with trans in "N" a test light
attached one side to a hot lead should light.
If it does not light, turn in a little till lights,
add a 1/4 to 1/2 turn after tester lights.

What the relay and switch do is make a ground that
tells the relay that the trans is in "N" and safe to
start and not cause any movement to truck or strain
the starter/ring gear.
If you never start in anything but "N" it really is not a issue (Park or N in later trans), I have a number of autos that I just ground that post on the relay.

I'm not starting about one in 20 starts, but when it decides not to it's short across or no go. I'll check the mechanism tmw, and possibly install an override switch just in case.

Post by MountainMoparRobin »

your not going to believe this, but I've never had my nuetral safety switch hooked up and have started it in gear a few times and just kept on going, infact I like if for when she is cold and if it stalls I hit the key while its rolling and wala :Thumbsup
