'61 Speedometer Disassembly

Post by Snowdog »

I need help!

In disassembling the gauges, they're all straight forward, but for the speedometer.

The advice from other parts of the internet is to bend the lip of the chrome trim ring to release it from the gauge.

That seems like I could hurt the ring though, and before trying, I wanted to try to get some counsel here.

To disassemble the speedometer from a '61, and get to the glass, what is the procedure?

Thank you!

I've opened 5 of the round speedo's. Time and patience are your friends. Go to Home Depot/Lowe's and get a hand full of free paint lid openers and grind the lip to almost a knife edge. You will go through 3-4 to get all the way around. Only bend the lip out far enough to gently pry the casing out a bit and twist the casing to remove. Hardest part is bending the lip back in place. You will have some distortion. I ground the inner ribs off a pair of pliers so not to leave marks on the lip. Good luck.
