Horn location

Post by SteveH »

Super silly question but where exactly is the horn located on a 66 W200? I’m getting my truck ready for the road and today was looking to get the horn working. And,…..I can’t find it. This truck used to be a municipal snow plow/salt spreader truck. I wonder if the horn got damaged and they tossed it? But maybe it’s hiding. If so,…I can’t find it.

Several possible places.
Inside the core support, next to the radiator, right side.
Shock mount near the frame, right side.
On the hood near the firewall.
If you don't see it at any of these places, look at the wiring harnesses for unused connectors that would have been for the horn.

It is as I figured,…gone. I looked everywhere. But i did find the horn wire in the steering wheel and traced it down to a dead end taped off inside the front grill. So,…mystery solved. I had to pull the steering wheel and clean the little roller contactor and the landing where the spring goes. Now the ohm meter shows a perfect ground when i push the horn button. Problem is,…no horn (!). So,…does anyone know the part number of the horn so I can start scouring for one? Also,…what style of horn would be similar or used on some other car/truck of the era? I’m not into authenticity as such, but would like something that has that 1960’s honk. Beat up, janky looking is fine for this truck,…it’s rough.

Don't forget the where they located them on the two extended shock brackets (at least that's where they were on my 67 D200 Camper Special).

On my '67 D100 the single horn is located between the fender and the rad support on the passengers side, which I assume is one of the correct locations (from pwrwgndrvr's description above). Should there be a single horn or two (hi and low tones)? And if 2 would it be situated in the same location?

I have a Canadian built 67 D 300 and the horns (dual) are located between radiator and inner passenger side fender on radiator support with a relay.

Thanks, good to know. So like StevenH I will be on the lookout for a second horn. Just need to figure out which one I have first.

I have seen "Hi" or "Lo" stamped on some horns from that time period but have not noticed them on my trucks.
