Just to clearify I = 5volts from fuel gauge and S = sender.

Sounds right. If they are actually reversed, it won't damage anything, the meter will read backwards--against the cold stop when the engine is warmed up. You may want to check it before you button the instrument cluster up. Disconnecting the lead from the sending unit and grounding it will cause the meter to peg against the hot stop.
