'67 W200 charging issue

Post by George67 »

I have a '67 W200 with the original 383 engine.
The system constantly pulses at lower rpm's from 13.5 to 15.8 volts.
At higher rpm's it will settle at 14.8 steady.
I have replaced the alternator, VR (Back to original), all ground cables, starter relay, ballast resistor.
It is burning out headlights, heater gauge and I believe fuel ascending unit.
My next thought might be a spark plug wire shorting to ground.
The pulse is like clockwork.
Any ideas????

Check and clean every connection in charging circuit and clean all grounds.

Pulsing is normal with vintage systems at low RPM, even when they were brand new. That's how the regulator regulates.

Thank you for the responses.
I will continue cleaning the grounds.
It also makes sense that it might be normal.

A cooked fuel gauge and temperature gauge could possibly be your
voltage limiter is done for....

Its integral to you fuel gauge. Here's an easy fix if this is part
of your problem....

if you have a shop manual the procedure to adjust the VR is in there. a bit involved but doable. the gaps between contacts have to be just right. within .0001. the one i have now pulses at idle but most of mine have not done that.

If you aren’t dead set on a stock look... get an alternator for a Hi Perf 305 Camaro and be done with it. Internally regulated 94amp.

If you want-need to keep it stock, have a GOOD alternator/starter shop go through it. IF you can find one that will touch a 61-69 round back case.
If I didn't build it, it ain't mine.

Just replace the VR with a solid-state one and your pulsing problems will be history. The original VR uses a set of points like your ignition and that is what regulates the voltage...........a solid-state unit uses electronics to smooth out the switching.

As mentioned, make sure your grounds are all good too. A lot of times people ground the body to the frame/chassis, which is bad (chassis/frame should never be used for grounding)........your engine block is your primary ground and the body/sheet metal should be grounded to the block and your primary ground from the battery, goes to the engine block.
